Anniversary Gala
Proclamation of Mark Emmert Day
Submitted by saraneppl on Wed, 06/23/2010 - 11:02amYou may have heard that at our 2010 Anniversary Gala, honorary chair William D. Ruckelshaus read a proclamation from Governor Christine Gregoire declaring June 14, 2010 Mark Emmert Day. As I was marking the day on our internal calendar and setting it to repeat every year - thereby adding it to our collective memory - I thought perhaps it would be nice to share the text of this proclamation with you!
WHEREAS, today CityClub is recognizing the importance of Washington’s entrepreneurial culture with its Gala focused on “Revolutionary Innovation;” and
WHEREAS, CityClub enjoys a long-standing partnership with University of Washington in support of building civic knowledge, connection, trust and action in the greater community; and
WHEREAS, since June 2004, Mark Emmert, a native son of Fife, Washington, has served as President of the University of Washington, one of the state’s flagship research universities and a linchpin of the region’s economy and health care; and
WHEREAS, the University of Washington, under President Emmert’s leadership, strengthened its commitment to educational opportunity and accessibility by launching the Husky Promise, a guarantee to the state’s hardworking students that financial challenges will not stand in the way of a college education; and
WHEREAS, during President Emmert’s tenure, the University of Washington completed the most successful fundraising campaign in its history, garnering the support of nearly 300,000 donors; and
WHEREAS, President Emmert has fostered a dynamic, collegial environment for growth and advancement at the University of Washington, exemplified by the creation of new initiatives in leading-edge fields, revitalized strategies for attracting a talented, diverse student body and providing a rich learning experience, and the expansion of the University’s reach across the globe; and
WHEREAS, under President Emmert’s direction, the University of Washington has built significantly upon its capacity for improving the health and welfare of people at home and around the world; and
WHEREAS, President has championed the University of Washington’s position as a world leader in environmental research, education, and practices; and
WHEREAS, President Emmert has advocated passionately and eloquently for the fundamental contributions research universities make to the quality of life and well-being of us all;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christine O. Gregoire, Governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2010, as
Mark Emmert Day
in Washington State, and I urge all citizens to join me in this special observance.
Thank You!

Snapped with my cell phone camera toward the end of the program. I believe that's Dave Ross up on stage!
Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for our 2010 Anniversary Gala program. We could not do what we do without your support! Gala panelist Mark Emmert; UW Magazine "President's Page"
Submitted by saraneppl on Tue, 06/08/2010 - 8:58amWith our gala less than a week away, we have our topic - and our panelists - on the brain all the time... and so do our volunteers! CityClub co-founder Colleen Willoughby directed our attention to this month's "President's Page" in University of Washington's alumni magazine, Columns. In his message, President Mark Emmert (one of our gala panelists) speaks briefly to his departure - but the majority of his writing addresses University of Washington's economic impact on our state. Alliance of Angels's Company of the Year is coming to our Gala
Submitted by ddouglas on Fri, 05/28/2010 - 3:43pmDid you know that one of the emerging entrepreneurs to be featured at the June 14 CityClub Gala was just named 2010 Company of the Year by the Alliance of Angels? I heard the story of this fascinating new company and met one of its dyanmic founders, Chistina Lomasney, at an AoA event earlier this spring. She talked about how the creation of Modumetal may just fulfill the vision Kirkland's founder, Peter Kirk, who moved from England to Washington State in 1886 to make our community the Pittsburgh of the West! How can Modumetal realize that dream? Join me at the Gala to meet Christina and find out!
CityClub's 2009 Anniversary Gala
Submitted by cityclub on Thu, 06/25/2009 - 11:51amIt's the day after the annual CityClub fundraising gala, and I am extremely grateful. Despite this challenging economy, we enjoyed both strong attendance and great results. We raised $80,000 for CityClub and exceeded our goal. We felt community all around us. We learned about leadership from our panel of sports owners - experienced and emerging - and their voices were hopeful, savvy, determined and committed. Along with expressing our gratitude, I also ask for your feedback. Your voice always makes us stronger.

Gala Swag!
Submitted by saraneppl on Thu, 06/18/2009 - 12:34pmOur office is filling up with sports paraphernalia! Piles and piles sports logos! Luckily for us, CityClub's color scheme happens to match the colors of most of the teams, so it's all fitting together quite nicely.
We're tempted to keep some of this stuff for ourselves, but the auction block is calling! Here's a sneak preview at some of the autographed swag we'll be auctioning off at our Gala next week!
Seattle New-Comer "Crash Course"
Submitted by saraneppl on Mon, 06/15/2009 - 1:57pmAh, the challenges of blogging during Gala prep week! As you may already know, The Big Day is next Tuesday, June 23 - so it's crunch time at the CityClub office. As busy as we may be, the rules of blogging are clear: if you want to keep your readers, be consistent! No skipping! But clearly, no sacrificing quality for quantity, either.
As the week begins, we're making shopping lists and ordering supplies, building slideshows and printing materials, and listening to inspiration theme songs on repeat. (I can't tell you which songs - they're a surprise!) We're crossing things off our the top of our to-do lists and adding more things on the bottom. In a few days we'll pore over reservation lists and assign seats.
While we're busy doing that, we want you to discuss amongst yourselves! One of our future goals for our new office space is a sort of orientation space - a library, for example, with information about other non-profits in the city, for folks who are new to Seattle and want to get involved in the community. Seattle's annual influx of newcomer residents (31%) is the second highest nationally, making Seattle a "first move" city.
Now, there's a rumor floating around that Seattleites maybe aren't the friendliest city folk out there - when we Tweeted a blog link that was floating around our office - "6 Things You Cannot Say in Seattle", from Crosscut's blog - the response in terms of comments back to us and "retweets" (people copying and pasting our Tweet into their feed) was one of the biggest we've had to a single Tweet. (Crosscut's now posted a follow-up: "6,000 things you can't say in Seattle (or Portland)".)Perhaps it's not just rumor, but surely we can improve? How can we do a better job welcoming and orienting newcomers so they feel connected and involved in our community?

What can you look forward to at CityClub's 2009 Anniversary Gala "Building Community Through Sport"?
Submitted by saraneppl on Thu, 06/04/2009 - 10:41amEvery year, as we plan gala, our committee members and staff come up with a million little fabulous ideas - and we always manage to pull off at least a few of them.
In 2007, our Gala committee chair called us at 2:00 p.m. the day before the big event and said she'd had a great idea that involved a rubber salmon - and could we get a rubber salmon and bring it the next morning? Sure enough, I took off as early as I could and went to Archie McPhee, where they had not one but TWO rubber salmon to choose from. (As one had the word "BALLARD" emblazoned across the side, we opted for the other.)
In 2008, we thought, wouldn't it be great if we could give everyone chocolate? There are very few people who don't enjoy (or can't eat) chocolate. Sure enough, after negotiatons, we were the generous recipients of about 400 Theo Chocolate bars (four flavors, 100 each), which we wrapped in an inspirational quote and pre-set at each seat. Although we did end up with quite a few leftover chocolate bars, they were still a hit. (Although I still love Theo chocolate, I may never eat another coconut curry Theo bar as long as I live.)
This year, our big ideas are coming together beautifully:
