Nancy Nordhoff: A Founder Who Believed in the Power of Civic Conversation

Seattle CityClub was born from a simple but powerful idea: that democracy works best when people come together in conversation, in curiosity, and in shared civic responsibility for the future.

Nancy Skinner Nordhoff was one of the individuals who founded Seattle CityClub and whose vision and leadership helped shape Seattle into the enduring civic institution it remains today. She, along with the other seven co-founders, Anne V. Farrell, Barbara M. Hodgson, Suzanne Hunter, Jean B. Rolfe, Marilyn B. Ward, Kate B. Webster, and Colleen S. Willoughby understood that informed citizens are the backbone of a thriving democracy.

Nancy believed deeply in the importance of civic participation. At a time when women were frequently marginalized from civic life, she helped create a space where people from different backgrounds, professions, and perspectives could become engaged and empowered. She often led by example and embodied the spirit of civic responsibility by supporting institutions, encouraging dialogue, and helping others find their voice.

Her impact extended throughout beloved Seattle institutions and beyond; she was known for her commitment to championing women’s leadership, which strengthened the social fabric of our world. Furthermore, Nancy’s long-held belief that respectful disagreement is valuable lives on through Seattle CityClub’s mission. She encouraged people to speak their minds and engage openly with one another in order to learn and work toward solutions.

Today, Seattle CityClub continues to host Civic Cocktails, debates, Legislative Preview, and other programs that connect residents to the issues and leaders shaping their lives. These programs exist because Nancy and her co-founders believed that civic life should belong to everyone. We are deeply grateful for Nancy Nordhoff’s leadership, generosity, and belief in Seattle CityClub’s mission. Her legacy reminds us that civic engagement is not the responsibility of a few, but the opportunity of all.
